In the heart of the Atlantic, pushed to the western borders of Africa, lies Santo Antão, the wildest and most fascinating of the Cape Verde islands. A place that is not just visited — it is lived. It is breathed. It is felt.

Second in size, third in population, first in the hearts of those who love deep nature and authentic culture. With its 40 km in length and 20 km in width, Santo Antão is a world apart. Volcanic, remote, untamed. Its extreme west is the westernmost point of all Africa.

Separated from São Vicente by a deep and often foggy channel, it was discovered on 17 January 1462 by the navigator Diogo Afonso — who named it in honour of the saint of the day. But it was not easy to conquer: a mountain range, considered impassable for centuries, cut the island in two. Only in 1548 did the first attempts at colonisation begin, with people coming from Santiago, Fogo and northern Portugal.

The Treaty of Tordesillas, signed in 1494, granted Portugal rights over all lands “west of the line” — an imaginary line that passed 1770 km from Santo Antão. It was official: this island was part of the Empire.

The Kolá San Jon is not just folklore. It is an identity. Since 2013 recognised as local intangible cultural heritage, in 2017 it became national intangible cultural heritage.
